Executive Summary
On August 22, 2026, version 0.4.1 of @syncraft-labs/core, @syncraft-labs/react, and @syncraft-labs/vue was compromised and published to the NPM registry containing an unauthorized obfuscated payload linked to the PolinRider threat actor campaign.
No source code in the GitHub git repository branches was modified or altered. The malicious payload was injected exclusively into the compiled distribution artifacts (dist/index.js) during an unauthorized publishing process initiated from stolen maintainer credentials.
All infected packages were immediately deprecated on NPM within hours of detection. A verified clean version 0.4.2 was built in an isolated environment and published, completely removing the malicious artifacts and locking down publication infrastructure.

Threat Context & Attack Vector
The incident originated from a social engineering scheme widely attributed by cybersecurity researchers to the PolinRider / Contagious Interview threat campaign:
- Initial Access via Social Engineering: The maintainer was targeted under the guise of an external technical freelance assessment, leading to the execution of a malicious test workspace in a local development environment.
- Credential Extraction: A background InfoStealer / Remote Access Trojan (RAT) payload extracted developer credentials stored on the machine, including a GitHub Personal Access Token (PAT) and active NPM publishing credentials.
- Unauthorized Release: Using these exfiltrated tokens, the threat actor triggered an automated build and published version
0.4.1of all three packages to the NPM registry.
Technical Payload Analysis
The payload injected into dist/index.js of version 0.4.1 featured the following behavior:
- Whitespace Padding Evasion: The malicious JavaScript code was placed at the bottom of the file separated by hundreds of empty lines (whitespace padding), designed to evade quick terminal file viewing, code diffing, and standard static review.
- Credential & Secret Harvesting: The code inspected environment variables (
process.env) looking for API keys, cloud provider secrets (AWS, GCP, Azure), database connection strings, and.envconfigurations. - Host Enumeration: The payload attempted to locate SSH private keys, git configuration tokens, and browser extension storage (targeting developer accounts and crypto wallet extensions).
- Command & Control (C2): Harvested metadata was packaged for exfiltration via outbound HTTP requests to remote attacker-controlled infrastructure.

- Rotate SSH keys, Git tokens, and NPM tokens.
- Inspect system startup scripts (
~/.bashrc,~/.zshrc,~/.profile) for suspicious appended commands.
Permanent Preventative Hardening
Syncraft Labs has instituted the following structural security controls to protect all future releases:
- Mandatory 2FA / WebAuthn Enforcement: Multi-factor authentication with hardware security keys is strictly enforced on all NPM accounts with publish rights.
- CI/CD Trusted Publishing via OIDC: Transitioned release workflows to short-lived OpenID Connect (OIDC) tokens with verifiable NPM build provenance attestations, eliminating long-lived personal publish tokens.
- Automated Artifact Diffing: Continuous integration pipelines now perform binary and abstract syntax tree (AST) comparisons between compiled TypeScript outputs and source trees prior to packaging.
- Isolated Sandboxing: All third-party evaluations, external contributions, and untrusted workspaces are strictly quarantined within disposable, non-networked containers.
